There’s something magical about making your own Christmas decorations, especially when you can do it with the whole family.
Instead of buying new, why not upcycle empty tin cans into adorable Santa figurines? It’s easy, fun, and a perfect way to turn recycling into festive holiday decor.
This project is approachable for all ages (with a little help for the tricky parts) and only needs a handful of supplies you probably already have at home.

Get ready to save money, reduce waste, and create lasting memories together as you craft your own cheerful Santas!

Materials You’ll Need
- Empty tin cans (cleaned and dried)
- Red, white, and black felt sheets
- Cotton balls or fiberfill
- Small white and red pom-poms
- Googly eyes or small black beads
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
- Tape or sandpaper (to smooth edges)
Step 1: Prepare the Cans
First, remove any labels from your tin cans and wash them thoroughly. Make sure each can is completely dry before you start decorating. This helps glue and felt stick better.
Check the rim of your cans for any sharp or rough edges. If you find any, gently smooth them down with sandpaper or cover them with a strip of tape.
This step is important, especially if little hands will help with decorating.
Set your prepared cans aside on your workspace so you’re ready for the fun part…decorating!

Step 2: Wrap Santa’s Suit
Measure a strip of red felt that’s just wide enough to cover the height of your can.
Cut the felt and wrap it snugly around the can, securing it with hot glue along the seam. If you don’t have red felt, sturdy red paper works too.
For Santa’s suit trim, cut a thin strip of white felt. Glue this around the bottom edge of the can, right over the red felt. This instantly transforms your can into Santa’s iconic red suit!

Step 3: Add the Face
At the upper half of the tin can, wrap a wide white felt over the red felt. This will serve as the base for Santa's face and beard.
Cut the peach-colored felt paper into a small round pieces (about half the size of the tin can) to form Santa faces. Glue one piece over the white felt.
Next, glue on two googly eyes (or small black beads) over Santa's face for the eyes.
Just below the eyes, glue a small red pom-pom to serve as Santa’s nose. The face brings your Santa to life, so have fun with the placement!

Step 4: Create the Beard
Take a couple of cotton balls or a handful of fiberfill and gently pull them apart to make a fluffy, cloud-like beard and mustache.
Glue the cotton under Santa’s nose, shaping it however you like, make it curly, long, or even a little wild!
Press the beard in place for a few seconds so it sticks well, and adjust as needed while the glue dries.

Step 5: Make the Hat
Cut a triangle from a sheet of red felt, about 5 inches tall and as wide as the can’s top. Roll the triangle into a cone to make Santa’s hat, and glue the edge to hold the shape.
Wrap a strip of white felt around the bottom of the hat to make the brim, and glue a small white pom-pom to the tip. Let the hat dry for a minute before handling.

Step 6: Assemble and Decorate
Attach the finished hat to the top of your can using hot glue. Tilt the hat at a jaunty angle for a playful look, or keep it straight for a classic Santa.
Hold the hat in place for a few seconds to let the glue set.
Now, add extra details if you like! Glue on pink felt circles for rosy cheeks, use a black felt strip as a belt, or write each family member’s name on Santa’s hat with a marker.
Every Santa can have its own personality… like the one below 🙂

Tips for a Successful DIY Project
- Prepare all your materials and cut felt strips before you start assembling, it makes everything go smoothly.
- If kids are helping, let them decorate faces and glue on cotton, but handle the hot glue and sharp scissors yourself.
- Don’t worry if you don’t have every color of felt, mix and match what you have for unique Santas.
- Personalize your Santas by adding names, buttons, or a little glitter for extra sparkle.
Common Mistakes and Safety Precautions
- Always smooth or tape down sharp can edges before decorating to prevent cuts.
- Use glue sparingly as too much can soak through felt or make cotton look messy.
- Keep hot glue guns out of reach of young children and use a low-temp glue gun if possible.
- Let all glued pieces dry completely before handling or displaying your Santas to avoid things slipping out of place.
